Biodegradable newspaper pot

Biodegradable newspaper pot

A couple of years ago I found this in a Burpee catalogue.  Bought it and  have already made hundreds of pots.  Given how many years this will last, the cost per pot approaches zero!

Simply cut newspaper into strips, 25″ x 3 1/2″.  Starting on one end, roll the newspaper strip snugly around the wooden knob.  Fold the excess onto the bottom then place on base and twist while pushing firmly.  It’s magic!!    The economy & ecology of  recycling newspapers is a win-win!  Also there is  no need to clean & store plastic pots.  You can plant the entire pot with the seedling.  Just be sure that the newspaper is completely covered with soil so the moisture does not get “wicked” away.  This is especially important in our desert environment.  I have a couple of issues with these newspaper pots.  One is that you must monitor the moisture very carefully- the potted seedling can dry out or become soggy very quickly.  Creating the “perfect” environment is important.   They are also not very large which requires transplanting some plants into larger plastic pots before they are ready for the outdoor gardens.  These are relatively small negatives given how cool it is to make your own biodegradable pots by recycling your used newspapers!
